Generally, travelling by air is considered quite safe during pregnancy. But it is always best to ask your doctor first if you are planning to travel by air. There are many complications that may arise during air travel especially in women who have certain conditions like sickle cell disease, clotting disorder or placental insufficiency. It is always better to ask the doctor and take the decision after his nod. However, travel after 36th week should be completely avoided.

air travelIf you doctor gives you a go ahead and you can choose the time of your travelling, it is always best to choose the 2nd trimester. This is the most comfortable period of pregnancy and the risks of miscarriages have been bypassed to a great extent.

After you have decided to fly, the first step you should take is to review your airline’s travelling policy for pregnant women. You can find many guidelines and helpful information in the policy. Be careful in choosing your seat. Take the aisle side seat in case you might feel uneasiness. Fasten your seat belts to avoid any sudden jerks or ups and downs. Whenever possible, you should stand and take a walk in the aisle to keep your blood circulation intact, otherwise you many experience swelling of your feet or legs. Drink a lot of fluid while you travel as low humidity in the cabin can dehydrate your body.

Low air pressure during the flight may lower your oxygen level but it is not usually harmful in any way.
